L-Tryptophan ist eine essentielle Aminosäure, die vom menschlichen Körper nicht gebildet werden kann. Somit muss es in entsprechenden Mengen über die Nahrung aufgenommen werden. Dieser Eiweißbaustein L-Tryptophan ist in Fisch, Fleisch, Kartoffeln, Erbsen, Eiern oder Nüssen vorhanden, aber vor allem auch in Milch und Milchprodukten wie z.B. Käse. Hier kommt L-Tryptophan in hoher Konzentration in Form von Lactalbumin vor. Es ist außerordentlich wichtig, das wir das Tryptophan durch die Nahrung zu uns nehmen müssen.
Die Aminosäure Tryptophan ist besonders bekannt, weil es die Vorstufe des Neurotransmitters Serotonin und des Hormons Melatonin ist. Ebenfalls übernimmt Tryptophan eine wichtige Rolle bei der Unterstützung der Niacin-Synthese. Niacin ist auch bekannt unter Vitamin B3.
Im 20. Jahrhundert wurde es von den Nobelpreisträger Frederick Hopkins entdeckt. Er fand heraus, dass die Menschen es selbst nicht herstellen können. Weiteres fand er heraus, dass Vitamine, Mineralien und Aminosäuren darunter L- Tryptophan, unabdingbar für die Entwicklung eines Lebewesen ist.
Der Großteil des Serotonins wird im Darm produziert, nur in Geringen Mengen im Gehirn.
